Boulder International Clown Training 2018: CLOWN'S LIFE

28 July, 2018  → 14 August, 2018 - Boulder, Colorado, USA

Boulder Advanced Workshop 2014

WRITING AND DEVISING CLOWN POETRY

This workshop is an in-depth exploration of the poetic world of Clown, an archetypal comic space for the actor-creator and a key step in the journey of movement based theatre.

This advanced workshop will go into the depth of the clown state, considered as an Non-Ordinary State of deep creativity. The work starts with the analysis of the physical and emotional world of the actor, as revealed by her or his natural body with the help of the Neutral Mask. The use of this Mask deepens the clown state and allows a profound connection with the core movement patterns of each person. This leads to the unfolding of a unique clown, with a peculiar state of perception of reality.

The poetical power of the clown is based on an extreme emotional openness and vulnerability, a vivid articulation of the present moment, and a very direct and naïve approach to the world. The fluidity of contact with reality triggers the poetic flow.

The Clown is a poetic transposition of the actor’s most intimate space.
As the Neutral Mask is the mask of humanity, the Red Nose is the humanity of the mask.

Once the individual clowns have emerged, the journey of the workshop will guide them to the exploration of themes of everyday life, like love and relationships, illness and death, power and hierarchy, social conventions and institutions such as education, politics and health care...
The final step will be the approach to poetic writing and each actor will work on a clown monologue and on a variety of scenes emerged from the exploration. The final step of the workshop will be a public performance of the devised acts.
The last two days of the class, after the perfomance, are dedicated to the integration of the work and the exploration of various ways to bring the clown work on stage, with and without red nose, and in life.

ADMISSION

Joan Mirò: The Smile of the Flamboyant Wings, 1953

This workshop proposes an intense emotional work, and requires of participants the pleasure and the commitment to explore the genuine vulnerability and grace that the clown can bring out. It’s about playing from the heart. Whatever is the state of the actor's heart, the clown's heart is always open. We will laugh and cry abundantly and this will make us deeper human beings and better artists. It’s deep fun to be deeply alive.

Please note that this workshop requires previous participation in a RED NOSE training with Giovanni Fusetti.
Priority will be given to those who have attended the long trainings, either in the format of the three or four weeks, or as a part of longer training programs (KIKLOS, HELIKOS, LISPA, NAROPA).

This is not just a theatre workshop. If you are only interested in the technical/theatrical aspect of clown and physical comedy, this might not be the work you are looking for.  Please read the attached document by Giovanni, as well as Giovanni's bio and the page my roots, to learn more about the ingredients of his approach to clown and theatre.

To apply to the training please email a letter of motivation. Giovanni will choose students from the applications received, forming the group. If the student's application is accepted, s/he will be given a spot in the class, in the order the application was received.

Once Giovanni has selected 12 students, the workshop is full, and a waiting list will be created.  Please note that this workshop tends to fill up fairly quickly so if you intend to participate, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

Enrolments on MAY 15th:  1 spot is still available.

To confirm the enrollment, a deposit of US$500 is due. Please note that the deposit is non-refundable.
