THE FUNDAMENTALS OF HELIKOS

8 October, 2012  → 13 October, 2012 - Florence, ITALY

The Journey of the Poetic Body

Exploring the fundamentals of Helikos Pedagogy

with
Giovanni Fusetti
and Helikos Pedagogic Staff

This workshop is primarily addressed to students who are in the process of applying for the three year training at Helikos and are interested in experiencing the pedagogic approach of the Scuola Internazionale di Creazione Teatrale HELIKOS.

This workshop aims to explore some of the fundamentals steps of the journey proposed by the school, in order to give an overview of Helikos pedagogic vision.

Day 1: Action, Reaction and Play
Day 2: Red Nose Clown
Day 3: Neutral Mask
Day 4: Theatre Masks
Day 5: Playing with Theatrical Forms

First, the work will lead the students to explore the simple presence of the body in space and the dynamic of "le jeu".
Through movement analysis and movement technique ,each actor will discover the ways in which every human body is unique. This will lead to the discovery of the individual Clown, through the analysis of the physical and emotional world of each actor, as revealed by her or his body and core movement. The use of the smallest mask in the world, the Red Nose, and the amplification and articulation of personal themes, allow the actor to enter the Clown State.
After realizing the unique "comic persona" of every body,  the Neutral Mask will lead the actor towards a state of physical presence, calm and openness to space.  There is a web of "non-neutral attitudes" and physical and emotional "background noises" within each person's movement and physical presence.   If observed through the reference of the Neutral State, this web appears like paintings/markings on a white sheet. They are “dramatic” in the etymological sense of the word. They contain a drama: an action. The Neutral Mask teaches the actor ot unfold any "individual physical drama" to reach a state of pure presence in space, in the silence of the present moment. It’s the base for all theatre masks.

After developing the actor's awareness of the Neutral State, the workshop will explore some of the infinite possibilities of creating characters, based on variations from neutrality, including the exploration of highly theatrical characters, using Full Masks and Half Masks. The focus will be on exploring how each character's development is rooted in its imbalance from neutrality.

ADMISSION

This workshop is a basic training on the foundations of Helikos pedagogic work, and it is specifically devised to provide the participants a training experience similar to the everyday training at the school.
Helikos School engages the students and the teachers for a very long period of work together, in the mutual commitment of an intense pedagogic relationship. For this reason, before the formal application to the school, Giovanni Fusetti as the director of the school, strongly encourages potential students to attend this workshop, to meet the staff and the work, in a training context similar to the context of the school.

On Saturday October 13th, Giovanni will present Helikos, and the journey proposed by the school. Then he will have an individual session with students who wishes to apply for the three-year training at Helikos
