THE SUBLIME STUPIDITY

Theatre Clown and the essence of Physical Comedy

The Clown is a very precise and rigorous poetical dis-order.
It is the poetical transposition of the unique silliness of the artist.
It’s a state of presence, completely rooted in the here and now of the action in space.
Among all theatre genres, Red Nose Clown is the most personal and original of all: it’s a fin crucial step in the journey of Physical Theatre, when the artist arrives to explore his own imperfections, physical conflicts, “non-neutral attitudes,” and “background noises,” to amplify them with the use of the smallest mask in the world: the Red Nose. As a theatrical language, Clown has a unique poetic potential because it allows the artist to explore and play with the naiveté of the child and the rigor of the adult, thus revealing the poetry of the absolutly ridiculous.

There are many ways of being funny: creating comic characters, comic actions, comic stories… But each one of us is stupid in a very specific and original way. The sublime stupidity of the clown is his enduring openness to life, despite his own radical imperfection.
During this lecture, Giovanni Fusetti will guide the audience through a journey of discovery of the world of Clown. He will trace an artistic and pedagogical history of this way of theatre-making, and will connect Clown with different theatre genres, and with the world of theatre masks, flirting with its philosophical and spiritual dimensions. He will prove to the dear audience that intelligence is limited and stupidity is infinite, and he will celebrate his own stupidity as well as the audience’s, with a variety of demonstrations on clowns and their world, including a brief open class on discovering one’s own clown.
Come if you want to face your perfect imperfection.

THE TAO OF LAUGHTER

Comic Archetypes and the Healing Power of Humor

Laughter is a universal human delight. Comedy, or the art of making people laugh, is as ancient as humankind. There are so many ways of being funny: jokes, comic characters, comic actions, funny stories, paradoxes, non-sense… And there are many comic genres, each one creating laughter through different patterns: comedy, satire, absurd, grotesque, slapstick, clown…
What is in common is the mystery of laughter: the moment in which something in our body lets go and an overflow of vitality takes over, in a dance of breath, sound and pleasure.
And then there is something unique and original that makes each one of us funny in a particular way and that makes each one of us laugh for specific and very intimate reasons: it’s our sense of humor.
Humor emerges as an ally at the edge between order and chaos, between controllig and letting go, between fighting and surrendering, between trauma and release.
The Clown, the Trickster, the Fool, the Bouffon, the Joker are just a few of the archetypal figures that inhabit our psyche and are always available to teach us the crazy wisdom of letting go. To laugh at oneself, to laugh with oneself, transforms fragility, imperfections and contradictions into comic poetry and power.

During this lecture, Giovanni Fusetti will guide the audience in a poetic journey through a variety of comic territories and archetypes, exploring the artistic, psychological and spiritual dimension of humor and laughter.
Drawing from his 25 years experience in the use of theatre in performance, artistic training, education and healing, he will celebrate the paradox of being human and the beauty of our perfect imperfection.

Bouffons and the Ecstasy of Mocking

A lecture demonstration
with
Giovanni Fusetti

During this lecture, the Italian theatre pedagogue and fool Giovanni Fusetti will guide the audience through the history and origins of this dramatic territory, from its origins in Greek theatre to its contemporary variations, and he will explore the unique wildness and the profound mythological and political power of Bouffons

He will he explores questions like:

Where do Bouffons come from?

What is their relationship with Clown and comic theater?

What is their dramatic potentials?

What is the duality between tragedy and bouffons?

The word Bouffon is a modern French theater term that was re-coined 1960 by Jaques Lecoq at his international theater school in Paris to describe a specific style of performance work, based in the art of mockery.

The essence of the Bouffon is mocking: the mocking figure is a specific role, existing in all human societies. The bouffon represents elements of his or her society in an amplified, distorted, exagerated way, therefore provoking laughter or outrage. Bouffons don't have opinions, and don't protect any side from their mocking. Their purpose is to have fun mocking humans and therefore they use everything they find. This is their power: they see and play with everything.

Date & Time:
January 22nd 4:30pm - 6:30pm (Including a Q&A)
Location:
Richmond Uniting Church, 26 Waltham Pl, Richmond, 3121
